Classic Deli Style Sub Sandwiches

Classic deli style sub sandwiches save you a trip to the deli or market whenever you are craving a hearty sandwich. A loaf of Italian bread gets stuffed to the brim with meats, cheese, and veggies for a treat your family will love.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian bread halved, lengthwise
  • oil & vinegar to taste
  • lettuce
  • thinly sliced tomatoes
  • 1 lb thinly sliced deli ham
  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef bologna
  • 1/2 lb sliced American cheese yellow or white
  • 1/3 cup sliced banana pepper rings
  • 1/3 cup thinly sliced dill pickles
  • 1/2 large sweet onion very thinly sliced
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Season the inside of both halves of the loaf of bread with oil & vinegar, to taste.
  • Top the bottom half with a thin layer of crisp iceberg lettuce, followed by a layer of thinly sliced tomatoes.
  • Top with a layer of sliced bologna, followed by a layer of sliced ham, and finish with a layer of sliced American cheese.
  • Add the sliced banana pepper rings, thinly sliced onion, and pickles. Season with salt & pepper, to taste.
  • Top the sub sandwich with the other half of bread, slice into sandwiches, and serve.

Notes

  • If you want less bread and more room for toppings, you can hollow out the middle of the top and bottom of the Italian loaf.
  • You can switch up the meats and add or substitute salami, roast beef, turkey, or whatever you like.
  • Sometimes you'll see deli subs with mayo in addition to oil and vinegar and you can absolutely do that if you like.
