Is there anyone that doesn’t love a good Big Mac?

I think pretty much everyone has had one at some point.

And sometimes, I just crave them.

But my wallet and my overall health and wellness don’t want to always give in to the urge to hit the drive through.

So, I do make an at home version of a Big Mac but serve it over salad fixins for a fraction of the cost of getting the family takeout.

And since it’s loaded with veggies, it has lots of good for you things that the McDonald’s version doesn’t have.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Burgers– Leftover grilled burgers that are cooled and chopped.
  • Minced onions– Rehydrated
  • Lettuce– A head of iceberg, washed, cored, and chopped.
  • Cherry tomatoes– Cut in half lengthwise.
  • Cheese– Shredded cheddar
  • Dill pickles– The round slices known as chips.
  • Big Mac sauce– Homemade or substitute your favorite 1000 Island salad dressing

How to Make

Big Mac salad is so quick to make and a fantastic way to use up your leftover burgers!

To make it, just toss the chopped veggies, rehydrated onions, burgers, and shredded cheese together in a large mixing bowl until evenly combined.

Scoop the salad into serving bowls and drizzle with Big Mac sauce.

Garnish the salads with chopped pickles.

Enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

This salad is best the day you make it so I don’t recommend planning for leftovers.

If you do have them, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

How does McDonald’s rehydrate their onions?

Turns out McDonald’s doesn’t actually chop or cook their onions in house.

Instead the onions arrive at McDonald’s in a dehydrated package.

To rehydrate them, McDonald’s soaks them in water for several hours prior to draining the extra water off and serving them on their burgers.

You can do this at home by adding dried minced onions to a bowl with about 1/4 cup of water.

Then microwave the onions for 30 seconds and let the onions sit in the water for 15 minutes or until they absorb the water.

Drain off any excess and serve it on the salads.

Tips and Tricks

  • When you are meal planning, if you plan one night of burgers, double the amount so you can make this later in the week!
  • You can substitute the iceberg with romaine if you prefer and use your choice of cheese if you don’t care as much about that authentic Mickey D’s taste.
  • This recipe is easy to scale up or down depending on how many people you are feeding.
