Candied grape Easter eggs are a sweet, sour dessert treat we love. Perfect as part of a springtime dessert spread and a fun way to let your kids have a guilt free treat!
We make a huge spread of desserts and sweets for all the holidays and Easter is no exception.
Amid all the candy of the day and fancy desserts, one of our absolute favorites are these candied grape Easter eggs.
They are so easy and fresh tasting- the perfect counterbalance to all the sweet.
Even my husband, who has an insatiable sweet tooth, will happily gobble these down as a late night healthy-ish treat.
And they aren’t just for Easter!
We make them year round because they are so easy and delicious.
What are candied grapes?
Candied grapes are just green grapes spritzed in water and sprinkled with JELLO.
You might also know them as:
- frosted grapes
- JELLO grapes
- sugared grapes
- sour patch grapes
Depending on what flavor JELLOs you use, you may end up with a bunch of grapes that looks just like little brightly colored Easter eggs.
Ingredients
To make these you only need a couple ingredients:
- Grapes– Green grapes. Don’t substitute red or black grapes and make sure to buy the non cotton candy variety of the green grapes. You want that little bit of tartness from the grapes that you don’t get as much with other varieties. Plus the green grapes allow the color of the JELLO to shine through.
- JELLO mix– You can use one kind of JELLO or you can mix it up so you get different flavors and colors.
- Water– In a spray bottle.
How to Make
Start by remove the stems from the grapes and putting them into a colander.
Rinse the grapes well with cool water and let them drain but don’t dry them.
Then, pour the JELLO powder into a clean bowl and put a handful of damp grapes into a second clean bowl.
Sprinkles the grapes with 1-2 tablespoons of JELLO powder, rolling them around in the bowl to evenly coat.
If there are any stubborn un-JELLOed parts, spritz them with water and sprinkle more JELLO powder on to coat and roll the grapes around until they are evenly covered.
Put the JELLOed grapes into a clean bowl and set it aside.
Repeat until all the grapes are coated.
Serve immediately or chill for 2 hours and then serve.
Enjoy!
Storing
I like to store these in the fridge in a sealed container.
They will stay good for about 4 to 5 days in the fridge.
Can I freeze candied grapes?
Yes!
To do it, just put them in a single layer in a freezer safe container and pop them into the freezer.
They will last a week or more.
Tips and tricks
- Worried about feeding the kids or yourself too much sugar? Use sugar free JELLO.
- Make sure you are spritzing and not spraying or soaking the grapes with water. Too much water makes the JELLO run off.
- If you use multiple flavors of JELLO, use multiple bowls to keep the powders separated.
- Even though we call these Easter eggs, these aren’t just for Easter! Make them year round for a healthy-ish treat.
