You only need 6 ingredients to whip up this creamy tomato bacon dip. It’s got all the flavor of a classic tomato sandwich, but in dippable form- making it the perfect appetizer for summertime snacking and serving at backyard barbecues.
Tomatoes are the lifeblood of my Summer menu.
I could seriously eat them morning, noon, and night!
Which means I’m always on the hunt for the next best thing to do with them.
Other than as a topping, or in salads- we adore eating them in dippable form. Dips are so versatile!
Salsa, caprese salad, bruschetta- tomatoes are easy to turn into fun finger food that can take on virtually any flavor.
However, I always end up going back to our old favorite the classic tomato sandwich. Until one day it finally dawned on me to turn those flavors into a dip!
This creamy tomato bacon dip has all the same flavors you love, and is easy to throw together.
It’s perfect for entertaining, and also a great way to take advantage of affordable seasonal produce.
Ingredients Needed To Make A Creamy Tomato Dip
For me the best dips almost always end up being the simplest to whip up. This dip recipe fits the bill perfectly and only requires a handful of easy ingredients.
You’ll Need:
- Tomatoes – Fresh, ripe diced tomatoes, about 2 1/2 cups worth, with seeds and pulp discarded.
- Bacon – You’ll want 8 slices of crisply cooked bacon, drained to remove excess grease. You can use fewer slices, if needed.
- Mayonnaise – Real mayo, and a variety you enjoy since this flavor will shine through. Do not substitute Miracle Whip.
- Sour Cream – Plain, unflavored sour cream and you can use regular or reduced fat.
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Seasonings – A pinch of garlic powder and freshly cracked black pepper for garnish. Simple seasonings that really help take this dip’s flavor over the top!
How To Make The Best Bacon Tomato Dip
One of our tomato bacon dip’s best qualities (other than outstanding flavor, of course!), is just how easy it is to throw together.
To start, make the creamy dressing.
Add mayonnaise, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder to a mixing bowl. Whisk them together until the dressing has come together and is smooth.
Add your prepared tomatoes to the bowl. Stir them in just until evenly incorporated.
Crumble your bacon so the pieces aren’t any bigger than the diced tomatoes. Smaller pieces are ok too.
Add the bacon to the mixing bowl, and again stir just until mixed in.
At this point you’re dip’s almost ready to serve.
You could just eat it out of the mixing bowl, which is what we do at lunch and as a light snack.
If you’re serving it for guests, transfer the tomato bacon dip into a serving bowl you like.
Top it with a generous sprinkle of freshly cracked black pepper. If you’re worried it will make it spicy, you don’t have to do this but everyone we’ve served it to has agreed it really does add the finishing touch.
Serve the dip and dig in!
Best Dipping Options
While my sons and I can often be found eating this dip straight out of the mixing bowl by the spoonful, that’s probably not the best option for parties or serving guests.
We recommend pairing this with several different options for dippers. Our favorites include:
- Crackers – Ritz, club, saltines, water crackers all pair perfectly
- Pretzels – Any shape or size, or even pretzel chips
- Veggies – Sliced cucumbers, celery sticks, and sliced radishes are my go-to’s
- Bread – Sliced baguettes or even toast triangles are delicious options that play up the tomato sandwich vibe
Again, we like to pair this with 2-3 of the options mentioned so guests can choose for themselves. Whichever option you go with, you can’t go wrong!
Storing
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container, and refrigerated for another day.
While the dip won’t go bad after another 24 hours- the creamy ingredients start to break down and the tomato and bacon get soggy.
It’s still safe to eat, but not nearly as appetizing.
Can Tomato Bacon Dip Be Made Ahead Of Time?
Because the sauce will break down over time, even when refrigerated, I don’t recommend making the whole recipe ahead of time.
However, if you’re trying to prep things to make things quicker for yourself- you can absolutely prepare all of the ingredients, including the dressing, and just store them separately in the fridge until just before serving.
When you’re ready to serve, just mix everything together!
What’re The Best Tomatoes To Use For Making Dip?
There’s no right or wrong tomato to use here, and all will taste equally delicious in this dip as long as they’re fresh & ripe.
Roma tomatoes are ideal to use when making dips or salsa because they’re a meatier variety with less seeds.
They’re fleshier with less seeds, meaning each tomato yields more useable fruit and there’s less mess to discard.
They will yield the creamiest results without making the dip runny.
