Mason jar butter is a delicious homemade butter perfect for slathering on any bread, roll, or muffin. This simple recipe is fun to do with kids, who seem to love shaking the mason jar, and gives you a rich, delicious spread!

Making homemade butter in a mason jar!
It is very kid friendly to make with only 2 ingredients needed.
And it gets out all their energy if you give them the job of shaking the jar!
Plus it results in butter that’s richer than any store bought butter and perfect for slathering on your favorite bread and rolls.
Ingredients and Supplies
You only need 2 ingredients to make mason jar butter:
- Heavy cream– Don’t substitute for lower fat dairy.
- Salt– If you want to make unsalted butter you can skip this.
And of course, you need a mason jar with lid and sealing ring!
How to Make Butter in a Mason Jar
It’s pretty easy to make mason jar butter- especially if you are getting your kids to do the shaking!
To do it, just fill the jar halfway with heavy cream and add the salt.
Then secure the lid and sealing ring on the mason jar.
Vigorously shake the jar for 10 minutes.
Eventually the butter will begin to form and you’ll hear and feel a thumping as it does.
Keep shaking the cream until it separates into a lump of butter and buttermilk.
This could take just another minute or up to 5 more after you first notice the thumping start.
Then set a small strainer over a bowl and pour the contents of the jar into the strainer to separate the butter from the buttermilk.
You can save the buttermilk to use in another recipe and set it aside in a sealed jar in your fridge.
Take the butter and shape it into a ball with clean hands.
Then briefly run the butter under cold water until the water runs clear.
Use immediately however you would use butter and enjoy!
How long does homemade butter last?
Mason jar butter can be stored in the fridge in a butter dish for up to 2 weeks.
You can also pat it dry and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap before placing it in a ziplocking freezer bag and freeze it for up to 3 months.
Tips and Tricks
- Shaking the mason jar can be very tiring. Definitely enlist your kids to help and take turns do the shaking.
- Don’t want to get an arm workout while making butter? Make this in the bowl of your stand mixer instead.
- Want to make flavored butter? You can sprinkle in cinnamon to make cinnamon butter or chopped herbs for herb butter.

Instructions
- Fill your mason jar half way with heavy cream. Add a pinch of salt. Add the lid and sealing ring, turning until tightly closed.1 cup heavy cream, 1/4 tsp salt
- Vigorously shake the jar for 10 minutes- you'll be able to hear and feel when the sound changes as the butter forms and begins to separate.
- Continue shaking the whipped cream until it finally separates into a lump of butter and buttermilk- this could take a couple more minutes or up to five.
- Set a small strainer over a bowl, and pour the mixture into the strainer.
- Reserve the buttermilk to use in another recipe, and shape the butter lump into a ball using your hands. Briefly run it under cold water- just until the water runs clear.
- Use immediately, and enjoy!
