Sometimes recipes have wild names- especially regional ones or diner fare.

(Here’s looking at you SOS.)

Well this is another one of those dishes with a wild moniker that sounds something like Oscar the Grouch dreamed up.

But, my friends, the green garbage dweller wouldn’t actually be pleased to find out that there is no actual trash in a New York garbage plate.

A garbage plate typically includes a base like fries or macaroni salad topped with burgers or hot dogs, all finished with a rich meat sauce and other toppings.

No garbage whatsoever.

Sorry Oscar.

The name comes from the way all the deliciousness gets piled together in a messy mountain on one plate.

It’s nothing short of amazing and so fun to eat!

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • French fries– We like them crispy cooked since they hold up to the toppings better but if you like more potato-ey style steak fries you could use those instead.
  • Macaroni salad– Your favorite kind. This is perfect to use up leftover macaroni salad.
  • Cheeseburgers– Grilled. Again this is perfect if you are using up cheeseburger leftovers from earlier in the week.
  • Mustard– Yellow
  • Spicy meat sauce– This New York hot dog sauce is perfect for this.
  • Onion– Diced white onion

How to Make

Making a New York garbage plate is super easy and doesn’t require much in the way of cooking skills.

To make it, just add the fries to one half of a large plate and the macaroni salad to the other half of the plate to make base.

Add both warmed cheeseburgers to the center of the plate.

Drizzle mustard over everything and then ladle on a generous scoop of meat sauce.

Finish it by topping the pile with diced white onions.

Serve and enjoy!

Storing

This is one of those dishes that does not store well since the fries will get soggy.

However, if you have unassembled leftovers, you can store each component in its own individual airtight container in the fridge to make another plate later on.

Tips and Tricks

  • Don’t limit yourself to these toppings! You can add others like ketchup, hot sauce, crusty bread slices, or more cheese.
  • If making this for a crowd, you can serve it bar style and have everyone assemble their own.
  • One of these plates is meant to serve at least two people, the way a big plate of nachos would.
  • Don’t worry if you aren’t getting things exactly to the proportions I use. These are guidelines only and this recipe is very forgiving and flexible.
