Getting my kids to eat veggies on the regular will forever be a struggle.

Some days I win. Some days I don’t.

Luckily, green beans are the one vegetable they always agree to, even when they’re straight from the can and just warmed up.

So naturally, I make green beans A LOT- and the holidays aren’t an exception. But I can’t in good conscience just heat up canned green beans and serve them on a special occasion.

I also like to keep things simple since preparing a feast for the extended family is already hard enough.

My solution? Throw them in my crockpot with some key additions, and let them slow cook for hours until they’re the best canned green beans you’ve ever had.

My whole family loves them so much they’ve dubbed them my ‘Christmas beans’.

This slow cooker green beans recipe tastes fancy enough to fit right in on any holiday dinner menu, but is easy enough to enjoy any day of the year.

Ingredients Needed

This slow cooker green beans recipe conveniently only needs a handful of ingredients.

To make it, you’ll need:

  • Green Beans – This recipe uses cut, canned green beans. Don’t sub string or Italian style for this. You’ll need 6 (14.5 oz) cans.
  • Broth – This recipe uses chicken broth. You could substitute vegetable broth, if desired.
  • Seasonings – A combination of dried minced onion, garlic powder, and seasoned salt give the beans their signature flavor.
  • Butter – A couple tablespoons of butter, give the broth and beans
  • Ham – You’ll want a ham hock, also sometimes labeled as a pork knuckle, with some meat left on the bone for this.

Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients, you’re ready to get started!

How To Make

If you didn’t know that the best side dish came from a can- you’re about to find out.

Making a batch of slow cooker green beans is as easy as dump, cover, and cook.

Start by adding all of the ingredients to the bowl of your slow cooker.

Give them a stir, nothing fancy, just until everything’s evenly incorporated together- mostly that the seasonings have been completely combined with the beans.

Cover and cook the beans for 7-8 hours, until the beans are falling apart and melt in your mouth tender.

Use a slotted spoon to serve the beans, so that excess juice drains away, and enjoy them warm.

How To Store Cooked Canned Green Beans

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to 3 days.

For longer storage they can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • While I like the addition of butter for richness, it is optional.
  • Like a little kick to your green beans? Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes.
  • If salt’s a concern then use low or no sodium broth. You may also choose to omit the seasoned salt, since ham is naturally salty.
