What is a bird dog sandwich?

This sandwich is literally a bird (chicken tenders) in a dog (hot dog bun).

Bird dog sandwiches are a sensation in South Carolina that have slowly spread to other parts of the South.

Nick Henry’s and J C’s Sandwich Shoppe made them popular.

Or maybe it was the delicious combination of chicken fingers, bacon, cheese, and honey mustard in a bun that made this sandwich such a hit.

How to Make

Making bird dog sandwiches is so easy!

Just, spread half of the bacon evenly out inside the hot dog buns.

Put a crispy chicken tender in each bun on the bacon.

Set the sandwiches on a sheet pan in a row.

Sprinkle the rest of the bacon evenly out over top of the sandwiches, followed by the cheese.

Bake at 350° for 5 minutes, just until the buns are toasted and the cheese has melted.

Drizzle the honey mustard sauce evenly out over top of the sandwiches, then sprinkle on the red onions.

Serve and enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Don’t store these assembled.

Like most sandwiches, they will get soggy in the fridge so only make as many as you think you’ll need.

Store extra ingredients separately in the fridge, if possible.

Variations

The beauty of these sandwiches is that you can vary them to suit your tastes.

Some different variations include:

  • Tossing the cooked chicken fingers in buffalo sauce before you build the sandwiches and then drizzling ranch or barbecue on top.
  • Adding chopped tomatoes onto the sandwiches.
  • Substitute ranch or honey barbecue for the honey mustard sauce.

Tips and Tricks

  • This recipe can be halved or doubled, as needed.
  • The red onion is a classic ingredient but you can skip it if you aren’t a fan of onions.
  • You could substitute sliced cheddar for the shredded cheese. To do this, just sort of tuck it into the buns instead of sprinkling it out on top.
