Spam fried rice is a classic take on the popular Pacific islands dish. This dish delivers tons of flavor quickly and easily in a budget friendly meal!
I’ve been drooling over the idea of a visit to Hawaii.
Unfortunately that’s not in the cards for me just yet.
So I’ve been scratching that itch serving up food with a Hawaiian flare.
This Spam fried rice is one of those recipes.
Spam has been super popular in Hawaii since World War 2, and -fun fact- Hawaiians eat more Spam per person than people from any other state!
Once you try this Spam fried rice you’ll know why!
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Sauce ingredients– Soy sauce, seasoned rice wine vinegar, and sugar
- Canola oil– Divided
- Eggs– Beat them
- Spam– A 12 ounce can cut into cubes
- Garlic– Minced
- Rice– Cold steamed white rice
- Green onion– Thinly sliced
- Sesame seeds– For garnish
How to Make
Spam fried rice is very quick and easy to make.
To do it, start by whisking the soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar together in a small bowl.
Set it aside.
Then heat one tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over high heat.
Once the oil is hot and shimmery, stir in the eggs, and scramble just until they are about three quarters of the way done or very softly scrambled.
Transfer them to a waiting plate and set them aside.
Add the rest of the oil to the skillet.
Then add the cubed Spam.
Fry the Spam, stirring often, until it has browned on all sides, roughly 4-5 minutes.
Stir in the garlic, and cook for 60 seconds or just until it is fragrant.
Then add the rice and sauce to the skillet, stirring together until evenly combined.
Stir fry the mixture, stirring often, until no moisture’s left in the skillet- roughly 2-3 minutes.
Then, stir in the eggs, breaking them apart.
Remove the skillet from heat and stir the sliced onion into the rice mixture.
Serve warm, garnishing with sesame seeds and more sliced green onions if desired.
Enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
The rice may get a little dry so you might want to make another batch of sauce to add in when you reheat it.
Tips and Trick
- DON’T overcook the eggs. Only cook them to the recommended 3/4’s doneness. They won’t be undercooked- residual heat will finish them while they sit.
- You can sub store bought teriyaki sauce for the sauce ingredients.
- Like things on the saucier side? You can add extra sauce to your liking, but taste the finished rice first.
