Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp liquid smoke use hickory or mesquite
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns toasted
  • 8-10 frozen onion rings cooked until crispy
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce your favorite brand
  • sliced pickles for serving (optional)

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, gently mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and liquid smoke. Form into 4 equal patties, slightly larger than the buns.
1 pound ground beef, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
  • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. During the last minute of cooking, top each with a slice of cheese and cover to melt.
    4 slices American cheese
  • Toast hamburger buns in the skillet or under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until golden and lightly crisp.
    4 hamburger buns
  • Spread barbecue sauce on the bottom bun, add the cheesy burger patty, and top with 2–3 crispy onion rings. Drizzle with more barbecue sauce and finish with the top bun.
1/2 cup barbecue sauce, 8-10 frozen onion rings
  • Serve warm with fries, tater tots, or coleslaw for a true diner-style meal.

Notes

  • Don't skip the liquid smoke! This is how you get the flame grilled flavor Burger King is known for!
  • A cast iron skillet will give you the best sear.
  • Air fry or bake the onion rings while the burgers cook for perfect timing.
  • Feel free to customize these to you liking with cheddar or pepper Jack cheese instead of American, ground chicken or turkey instead of beef, and your choice of barbecue sauce flavors.
  • Make a Double Rodeo Burger by stacking two patties on one bun or turn it into a Rodeo Bacon Burger with 2 strips of bacon on top of each burger.
