  • 1 12 pack original Hawaiian rolls
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup half & half can sub whole milk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp salted butter
  • powdered sugar for garnish
  • maple sugar for serving

Instructions

  • Add both the eggs and half & half to a mixing bowl, and whisk them together until evenly combined. Add the extract, cinnamon, and sugar to the bowl- whisking again until evenly combined.

  • Using a toothpick poke 5 holes in the bottoms of each of the rolls to help them absorb the egg mixture.

  • Gently pull the rolls apart, cutting off any bits of bread that comes away on the side. Add 4 rolls to the egg mixture, turning to coat and soak for only 30 seconds.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium low heat, and add two tablespoons of butter to the skillet.
    6 tbsp salted butter
  • Remove the rolls from the egg mixture with tongs, holding each above the bowl briefly to allow the excess mixture to drip off.
  • Transfer them to the hot skillet, and cook them for 30 seconds per side- flipping when golden brown until all sides including the top and bottom are done. Transfer to a waiting plate. Repeat in two more batches, until all the rolls are done cooking.
  • Serve them immediately with a sprinkle of powdered sugar over top and maple syrup for dipping.
    powdered sugar, maple sugar

Notes

  • Do NOT soak the rolls in the egg mixture for more than 30 seconds, otherwise they quickly turn into a soggy mess.
  • Be sure to pay attention to how hot you get your skillet, because if it's too hot they will burn.
  • Once you start cooking, this recipe moves very fast. It helps to have everything set up and ready to go ahead of time.
