Equipment

  • disposable paper cup
  • Food-Grade cotton wick
  • 1 chop stick to hold the wick

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf unsliced sourdough bread
  • 1 cup salted butter softened
  • 2 tbsp Hot honey

Instructions

  • Tie the wick to the chop stick and place it into the paper cup.
  • Soften the butter in the microwave, add the hot honey and combine. Pour the melted butter into the cup and refrigerate overnight.
1 cup salted butter softened, 2 tbsp Hot honey
  • Warm the bread and, using a knife, make a hole in the centre of the sourdough. Slice the sourdough without cutting the bottom of the bread.
    1 loaf unsliced sourdough bread
  • Gently remove the paper cup and place the hot honey butter candle into the centre of the sourdough.
  • Light the candle wick for about 15-20 minutes to let melted butter seep into the loaf.

Notes

  • Use regular honey in place of hot honey for a non spicy version.
  • I recommend only using paper cups as the mold for this edible candle because once the butter firms, the cup easily tears and pulls away from the chilled butter while maintaining its shape. We tested it in several other types of mold, and almost all virtually destroyed the candle when trying to remove. Silicone molds will work, but will yield a much smaller candle, making a paper Dixie cup the clear winner.
  • Change up the flavor profile to fit your meal or occasion. Sub hot honey for regular honey and add a touch of ground cinnamon or use fresh herbs or even roasted garlic in place of honey.
  • Be sure to only use a food-grade wick, or one that is made from only cotton or hemp, without any wax or chemical coatings.
