Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Great northern beans– Dried. If you don’t have them you can substitute another dried bean variety but it may change the taste slightly.
- Seasoning– Garlic powder, onion powder, bay leaf, salt and pepper
- Ham bone– Save this from your ham! Don’t have one? You can omit it but the ham bone does give this so much flavor!
- Liquid– A mix of chicken broth and water. You could use all of either chicken broth or water if needed.
- Onion– A large yellow onion peeled and diced
- Ham– Chopped leftover ham.
How to Make
Instant Pot ham and beans is so easy to make!
Just put the liner into your Instant Pot, then add the beans, onion, bay leaf, and seasonings to it.
Pour in the broth and water, but DO NOT stir.
Secure the lid on the Pot, making sure the vent valve is sealed.
Cook on HIGH pressure for 1 hour.
When the Pot beeps, do a quick release by carefully opening the vent valve, avoiding the escaping hot steam.
Once the pressure has released, take the lid off the Pot and use tongs to remove the bay leaf and ham bone.
Add the ham to the pot, stirring everything together to evenly combine.
Cover with the lid and let the mixture rest for 5 minutes.
Serve warm and enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
Reheat them in the microwave until warmed through, adding more liquid if needed.
Can I freeze ham and beans?
Yes!
To freeze this, let it cool and transfer it to a freezer safe container.
Freeze it for up to 3 months.
What thickens ham and beans?
Don’t worry if the mixture looks a little thin at first.
It will thicken while it rests and the beans will get creamy when you stir everything.
You don’t need to add anything to thicken it since the beans starchiness thickens this dish.
Do I need to soak the beans before making ham and beans?
Nope!
There’s no need to soak beans before cooking them in an Instant Pot.
Tips and Tricks
- I recommend serving this with either cornbread or beer bread.
- If it’s too thick, just stir in a little bit of broth to thin it.
- Want to include veggies? Add diced carrots and celery in with the onions. You could also add diced, drained canned tomatoes when you add the ham.
