With apple season right around the corner, I am looking forward to taking my boys on our annual trip to the orchard.

We pick tons of apples every year and let me tell you I use them in more than just pies.

I’m talking salads, cakes, and sandwiches like this apple cheddar panini.

Warm, grilled naan, melty cheddar, tangy honey mustard and tart apples make a sandwich I love.

And don’t let the name panini fool you into thinking it’s tricky to make- it’s not!

What is a panini anyway?

A panini is technically a sandwich made from Italian bread and grilled under weight.

However, it has evolved to mean almost any sandwich grilled, pressed sandwich like this one which uses naan instead of Italian bread.

A panini is crispy on the outside.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Naan bread– You don’t have to use this flat bread, but it makes excellent grilled sandwiches. If you prefer you could use pieces of Italian bread, pita bread, or another type of flat bread.
  • Apple– Core it and slice it thinly. I recommend Granny Smiths since they have a crisp texture that holds up to heat well.
  • Cheese– Sliced sharp cheddar
  • Red onion– Thinly sliced
  • Honey mustard– Use your favorite kind

How to Make

Place a layer of cheddar cheese slices on the bottom piece of naan.

Then, layer on sliced apples, sliced red onion, and then top that with another layer of cheddar cheese.

Spread a layer of honey mustard on the inside of the top piece of naan.

Place the honey mustarded naan on top of apple, onion and cheese, closing the sandwich.

Put the sandwich in the panini press until heated through, about 6 minutes.

Cut the sandwich in half and serve.

Enjoy!

Can I make a panini without a panini press?

Yes!

To do it, melt a tablespoon of butter on a griddle over medium heat.

When the butter has melted, put the sandwich on the griddle.

Weigh it down by putting a clean cast iron pan (or wrap the pan in foil) on top of the sandwich.

Let it cook for 3 minutes or so and then flip and cook for an additional 3 minutes.

Storing Leftovers

I don’t recommend saving leftovers of this.

The sandwiches will get soggy in the fridge.

Tips and Tricks

  • Slice the apples and the onions pretty thinly. They will layer better in thin slices.
  • Feel free to substitute another cheese like gruyere or Swiss for the cheddar.
  • Don’t spread on too much honey mustard to avoid soggy bread. If you want more honey mustard, serve it on the side and dip your sandwich in.
