One of our most watched movies when my boys were younger was Beauty and the Beast.

And of course, one of our favorite scenes is Lumiere leading the plates and silverware through “Be Our Guest.”

The splashy number is adorable and left us all curious:

What exactly is the Grey Stuff and is it truly delicious?

Well, friends, I can answer both those questions and tell you it most certainly is delicious just like Lumiere claimed.

What is “The Grey Stuff”?

The Grey Stuff is a dish the talking candelabra, Lumiere, sings about in Be Our Guest in Beauty and the Beast.

Disney serves the Grey Stuff as frosting on a cupcake in a Beauty and the Beast themed quick serve restaurant in Magic Kingdom called Gaston’s Tavern.

Their version, and mine, is a fluffy gray, Oreo flavored mousse like topping or dessert.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Milk– Any kind of dairy milk
  • Pudding mix– A full 3.4 ounce package of vanilla pudding and 3 tablespoons of chocolate pudding mix. The instant kind and not the stovetop kind.
  • Oreos
  • Whipped topping– The kind you’d buy in the frozen section like Cool Whip. Thaw it.
  • Sugar cookies– I like to use a slice and bake roll to make sugar cookies ahead of time.
  • Edible sugar pearls – For garnish.

How to Make

Fortunately you don’t have to be an enchanted piece of furniture to make the Grey Stuff!

Just mix the milk and vanilla pudding mix together in a large bowl until it starts to thicken.

Cover the mixture and refrigerate for 1-2 hours until it firms.

Once the pudding is set, crush the Oreos by sealing them in a ziplocking bag and rolling over the bag with a rolling pin until all Oreos are crushed in tiny pieces.

Then stir the crushed Oreos in the pudding mixture until thoroughly mixed.

Next stir the 8 oz container of whipped topping and chocolate pudding mix into the bowl.

Let everything set in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

Add the mix to a piping bag with a large star tip.

Storing Leftovers

If you think you will have leftover Grey Stuff, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Do not store it on the sugar cookies or it will become soggy.

Tips and Trick

  • You can make this up to a day ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. However, wait to pipe it onto the sugar cookies until just before serving to prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • The Grey Stuff doesn’t have to be served on top of sugar cookies. It also makes a delicious topping for brownies or a cookie sandwich. For fancier serving, you can also pipe it into sturdy cupcakes liners
  • To help the piped mixture stay firm, freeze for 15-20 minutes after you’ve transferred it to a piping bag.
