Uncrustables were kid gourmet food of highest order when I was a kid.
I mean come on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the crusts cut off!
The stuff of childhood dreams!
And now my kids love the original variety that we had growing up but are also always game to try the new varieties that have popped up.
For awhile, you could find different savory varieties with pepperoni and other fillings.
There are even Uncrustable breakfast bites loaded with turkey sausage, egg, and cheese.
My homemade breakfast Uncrustables also are stuffed full of sausage, egg, and cheese perfect for a morning meal on the go!
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Eggs– Beaten
- Butter
- Salt and pepper– To taste
- Sausage– Ground breakfast sausage
- Cheese– Cheddar
- Bread– White sandwich bread
How to Make
Homemade breakfast Uncrustables are easy and the perfect make ahead meal for busy mornings.
To make it, just brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, crumbling it as it cooks, until it cooks through completely.
Once it’s cooked, strain the sausage to get rid of the grease and then transfer it to a waiting plate.
Melt the butter in the skillet the sausage cooked and then pour in the beaten egg.
Season the eggs with salt and pepper to taste and scramble them.
When the eggs are scrambled to your liking, take the skillet off the heat and stir in both the sausage and cheese.
Using an Uncrustable cutter, cut circles out of two slices of bread.
Add a 1/4 cup of filling to the center of the bottom bread circle.
Add the top slice to cover, and use the uncrustable cutter to seal it closed.
Toast, bake, or air fry just until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
Serve and enjoy!
Storing
I recommend storing these in the freezer.
To do it, let the baked Uncrustables cool completely and transfer them to an airtight, freezer safe bag.
Pop the bag in the freezer and freeze for up to 3 months.
Then air fry or heat them in the oven when you are ready to enjoy.
Tips and Tricks
- You can save the cut pieces of bread to make egg in a hole.
- Part of the beauty of making homemade Uncrustables is that you can customize the filling to your liking. Substitute cooked, crumbled bacon for sausage or switch out your cheese or even use wheat bread instead of white bread.
- Don’t have an Uncrustables cutter? Fill the sliced bread then use a mason jar lid or glass and cut around the edges. Use the tines of a fork to press and seal the edges all around.
