Don’t think you have to be a top chef to make donuts at home.
Oh no.
There are all kinds of hacks to make fresh donuts lickety split.
And one of my favorite hacks is using canned biscuits to make donuts or in this case beignets.
What are beignets?
A beignet is a cousin of the donut.
It is a deep fried pastry or fritter made from yeast dough.
There are a few different variations, but the most popular kind- and my favorite- is topped with powdered sugar.
Ingredients
To make these you don’t need all the yeast dough ingredients since we are using biscuits.
You just need:
- Canned biscuits– Like Pillsbury Grands. Get a 16.3 ounce can.
- Oil– A mild oil for frying the donuts.
- Powdered sugar– To dust on top of the beignets
- Honey– To drizzle over or dip the beignets in. It’s optional but highly recommended.
How to Make
To turn biscuit dough into fluffy beignets start by filling a heavy bottomed pan with 2” of oil.
Heat it over medium heat until it reaches 350 F.
Meanwhile, cut each biscuit into 4 even pieces, then pinch them together and roll into spheres.
Working in batches so you don’t overcrowd the pan, drop them into oil and fry them until they are golden brown.
Use a skimmer to gently remove the beignets from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain off the excess.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar immediately.
Repeat this until you have used all the dough up.
Serve with honey if desired.
Enjoy!
Biscuit Beignets in the Air Fryer
Don’t want to deep fry these fritters? No sweat!
Make them in the air fryer instead.
To do it, lightly spray the basket of your fryer with nonstick spray.
Place the shaped biscuit dough in the basket so it is not touching.
Air fry it at 350 for about 6 minutes, flipping them halfway through.
Serve and enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
These beignets are best fresh and warm, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container on your counter for about 2 days.
Tips and Tricks
- Use a deep fry thermometer so you’ll know when the oil is the right temperature.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan or the beignets won’t cook properly.
- It helps the powdered sugar stick if you dust the beignets while they are still warm.
