Have you ever eaten a roll of raw cookie dough?

Like just taken a spoon and started scooping it right out of it’s refrigerated packaging?

It was a total guilty pleasure dessert for my in college.

Yes, I know it’s not good for you- you’re putting yourself at potential risks from both the raw egg and raw flour, but I was 18. Nobody was gonna keep me from my cookie dough.

Now that I’m older, and hopefully wiser, I still enjoy my cookie dough fix except much more safely.

I make edible cookie dough instead that doesn’t include egg, and the flour gets heat treated making it safe for raw consumption.

This edible monster cookie dough is fun, flavorful and a perfect family friendly dessert that tastes just like the raw cookie dough you crave, but is 100% safe to indulge in!

Ingredients Needed

Making this edible monster cookie dough is easy, and only calls for a handful of everyday ingredients.

To make it you’ll need:

  • Flour – This recipe uses plain all purpose flour.
  • Peanut Butter – Make sure you’re using the creamy kind, NOT a crunchy version. Crunchy peanut butter won’t mix well into the cookie dough mixture.
  • Sugar – Both granulated sugar and brown sugar.
  • Butter – A whole stick (8 tablespoons) or butter that’s been softened to room temperature. I recommend using salted butter since a little bit of salt enhances the recipe’s sweetness.
  • Extract – Vanilla extract, regular or imitation will both work.
  • Cream – Heavy whipping cream only- do not substitute for something with less fat content.
  • Oats – Quick cooking oats only. If you don’t have quick cooking oats, you can pulse rolled oats in a food processor to turn them into quick cooking oats.
  • Chocolate Chips – Six ounces each of milk chocolate and white chocolate chips.
  • Candy – M&M’s candy- you can use regular or fun size varieties in this recipe.
  • Pretzels – I recommend using the mini twist variety.

Once you’ve measured out all of your ingredients you’re ready to whip up a batch of this easy edible cookie dough with candy.

How To Make

While grabbing a package of cookie dough from the store is easy, it’s just as easy to whip up a batch of this edible monster cookie in your own kitchen.

Start by adding the flour to a microwave safe bowl, then microwave it for 1 1/2 minutes.

heat treated flour in a microwave safe bowl

Carefully remove the warm bowl from the microwave, then whisk the flour until no more clumps remain. Set the flour aside.

To a large mixing bowl add the peanut butter, sugars, butter, extract, and cream.

Using a hand mixer, blend the ingredients together on medium high heat until they’ve evenly combined.

If you’d prefer, you could also do this in the bowl of a stand mixer.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl using a rubber spatula, bringing down any of the mixture stuck to them.

Whip again, just until the mixture’s light and fluffy.

Add both the oats and prepared flour to the mixing bowl, and mix again until everything’s come together into an evenly mixed dough.

I like to start the mixer on low, and then gradually increase the speed so that the flour doesn’t poof up and settle all over my counter.

Add the chocolate chips, candies, and pretzels to the dough- folding in the with spatula until the pretzels are broken (but still larger chunks), and everything’s evenly combined.

That’s all there is too it- stick a spoon in your edible cookie dough because it’s done, and ready to enjoy!

Storing

Unless you’re sharing with several people, it’s likely you won’t finish all of this monster cookie dough in one sitting.

Luckily, leftovers store beautifully.

Add any extra to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

This can also be frozen, again in an airtight container, for up to one month.

When ready to enjoy, thaw in the fridge until softened.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Make absolutely sure you’re using a microwave safe bowl when heat-treating the flour. Bowls will typically state on the bottom what appliances they’re safe to be used in.
  • Use creamy, NOT crunchy, peanut butter in this recipe.
  • Don’t try to substitute the heavy whipping cream with something that has a lower fat content. Since this cookie dough doesn’t use egg, it needs the fat to emulsify when mixed to give it the traditional fluffy texture.
  • Prefer a different flavor of chocolate chip? Semi sweet, dark chocolate, even caramel will work.
  • Want to keep this a peanut butter flavored cookie dough? Use peanut butter chips and Reese’s pieces in place of the m&m’s. You can still use the pretzels, or even sub roasted salted peanuts instead.
