What is an egg boil?

Are you familiar with seafood boils, seafood foil packets, or shrimp boils where you cook shrimp, pieces of corn on the cob, and baby potatoes with Old Bay, butter, and lemon?

An egg boil is basically that but with hard boiled eggs instead of shrimp and veggies.

The seasonings are almost exactly the same!

In fact, some people may even call it a poor man’s seafood boil since they are so similar.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

an overhead image showing the measured ingredients needed to make an egg boil in a skillet

  • Hard boiled eggs– Use whatever method you prefer to boil them. I like Oven Baked Hard Boiled Eggs. Peel them after they are cool.
  • Butter– Unsalted
  • Aromatics– Half an onion finely diced and minced garlic cloves
  • Lemon– Just half
  • Seasonings– Old Bay, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, cayenne pepper, brown sugar, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper

How to Make

Like many viral TikTok recipes, an egg boil is so easy to make!

a wooden spoon in a skillet filled with melted butter and sauteed onions

Just melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Once the butter has completely melted, saute the onions in the butter for 3 to 4 minutes.

Then stir in the garlic and cook it until just fragrant.

Once this happens, stir in the rest of the ingredients except for the hard boiled eggs.

How to Serve

These are delicious on their own, but also pair well with:

  • roasted baby potatoes
  • rice
  • thick pieces of crusty bread or toast

Storing Leftovers

I don’t recommend making enough for leftovers.

Everything will sort of solidify in the fridge and you’d have to reheat it, which would lead to less than desirable eggs.

Tips and Tricks

  • Unsalted butter is a must in this! Old Bay has a lot of salt already in it and using salted butter could accidentally make this too salty.
  • You can make this with soft boiled or jammy eggs instead of hard boiled if you prefer.
  • Feel free to omit the cayenne and crushed red pepper flakes if you don’t like things with heat.
