Desserts are always a must for me whenever I host dinners.
We just need a little something sweet to finish off a meal, especially if we’re grilling.
It can be tough to decide on what will pair well with a meal, but thankfully these grilled strawberry shortcake kabobs make the perfect sweet ending for virtually any grilled dinner!
Ingredients Needed
Like all of our best recipes, these strawberry shortcake skewers only call for a handful of ingredients.
To make then you’ll need:
- Skewers – We use wooden skewers, and they MUST be soaked in water for at least an hour before using- to prevent burning.
- Strawberries – Roughly 8 large, ripe berries cut in half lengthwise.
- Cake – Either pound cake or angel food cake will both work here, cut into roughly 1″ chunks.
- Butter & Sugar – Salted butter is best and it needs to be melted, and this recipe needs a sprinkle of brown sugar.
- Glaze – Strawberry glaze can typically be found in a tub in the produce section near the fresh apples.
- Whipped Topping – Any type, or brand, you prefer- this is for dipping the grilled skewers in.
How To Make
Making grilled strawberry shortcake kabobs is so much easier than you’d think.
Start by adding a half a strawberry, a piece of cake square, and repeating until there’s three of each on your soaked skewer.
Repeat until all your kabobs are threaded.
Baste each kabob liberally with the melted butter, then sprinkle the brown sugar evenly out over top.
Transfer the strawberry shortcake kabobs to a hot grill on low heat.
Let them cook for 1-2 minutes, then flip them over to cook on the other side.
They don’t need a lot of time on the grill to cook, you’re more grilling them to get char marks.
Transfer the strawberry kabobs to a waiting serving plate, then drizzle them with the strawberry glaze.
Serve them warm, with thawed whipped topping on the side for dipping.
TIPS & TRICKS
- Soaking the wooden skewers is an absolute must. If you don’t, you run the risk of them catching fire when grilled.
- For extra rich flavor, skip the whipped topping completely. Use freshly whipped cream instead, it will give them a more authentic strawberry shortcake taste.
- Want to get them prepped ahead of time? Prepare the cake and the berries, then store separately. Assemble just before ready to grill.
