Hawaiian roll French toast is an easy spin on the classic breakfast that replaces the bread with none other than Hawaiian rolls. This is a twist on your morning meal everyone is sure to love!
I am not super creative most mornings.
It takes me a hot minute and a few hot cups of coffee to kickstart myself into action.
So one morning when one of the sons requested French toast for breakfast, I agreed, not realizing we were out of bread.
While we were out of bread, we did have a package of Hawaiian rolls.
And you know what they say, necessity being the mother of all invention or something along those lines.
Anyway Hawaiian roll french toast was born and it was more delicious than the classic French toast you know and love.
And that’s saying something!
But the added sweetness of the Hawaiian rolls really turns this into something extra special for no extra work at all.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Hawaiian rolls– a 12 pack of original Hawaiian rolls
- Eggs
- Half and Half– You could also substitute whole milk if needed
- Seasonings– Vanilla extract and cinnamon
- Sugar– Brown
- Butter– Salted
- For serving– Powdered sugar and maple syrup
How to Make
Making Hawaiian roll French toast is pretty similar to making regular French toast.
To do it whisk the eggs and half and half together in a mixing bowl along with the cinnamon, vanilla extract, and brown sugar.
Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium low heat, and add two tablespoons of butter to the skillet.
While the butter melts, use a toothpick to poke 5 holes in the bottoms of each of the rolls to help them absorb the egg mixture.
Gently pull the rolls apart, cutting off any bits of bread that comes away on the side.
Add 4 rolls to the egg mixture, turning to coat and soak for only 30 seconds.
After 30 seconds, remove the rolls from the egg mixture with tongs, holding each above the bowl briefly to allow the excess mixture to drip off.
Cook the coated rolls on the hot skillet for 30 seconds per side, flipping when golden brown until all sides including the top and bottom are done.
Once they are golden brown on each side, remove them from the heat and put them on a waiting plate.
Repeat in two more batches, until all the rolls are done cooking.
Serve them immediately with a sprinkle of powdered sugar over top and maple syrup for dipping.
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a couple days.
Keep in mind they will get sort of soggy in the fridge so for best result you’ll want to reheat them on a hot skillet on the stove top.
Tips and Tricks
- Do NOT soak the rolls in the egg mixture for more than 30 seconds, otherwise they quickly turn into a soggy mess.
- Be sure to pay attention to how hot you get your skillet, because if it’s too hot they will burn.
- Once you start cooking, this recipe moves very fast. It helps to have everything set up and ready to go ahead of time.
