Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Sourdough bread– 1 bakery loaf of unsliced sourdough. 
  • Butter– Salted butter softened.
  • Hot honey– Your favorite brand

You’ll also need a disposable paper cup, a food grade wick and a chopstick to hold the wick.

How to Make

This hot honey butter candle is surprisingly easy to make given how illuminating the result!

To make it, tie the wick to the chop stick.

Set the chopstick so that it is sitting on the rim of the paper cup and the wick is in the cup.

Melt the butter in the microwave and then stir in the hot honey.

Pour the melted butter into the cup and refrigerate overnight.

When you are ready to serve the butter candle, warm the bread and cut a hole for the butter candle in center of the sourdough.

Slice the sourdough leaving the bottom of the bread intact.

Remove the candle from the paper cup, placing it into the hole in the bread.

Light the candle wick for about 15-20 minutes to let melted butter seep into the loaf.

Storing

This is a single serve appetizer situation.

Once the butter candle melts there’s really no remolding it.

  • Use regular honey in place of hot honey for a non spicy version.
  • I recommend only using paper cups as the mold for this edible candle because once the butter firms, the cup easily tears and pulls away from the chilled butter while maintaining its shape. We tested it in several other types of mold, and almost all virtually destroyed the candle when trying to remove. Silicone molds will work, but will yield a much smaller candle, making a paper Dixie cup the clear winner.
  • Change up the flavor profile to fit your meal or occasion. Sub hot honey for regular honey and add a touch of ground cinnamon or use fresh herbs or even roasted garlic in place of honey.
  • Be sure to only use a food-grade wick, or one that is made from only cotton or hemp, without any wax or chemical coatings.
