What is yellow rice?

Yellow rice is traditional in some cuisines including west Asian, south African, Moroccan, Peruvian, and Caribbean.

It’s made from white rice cooked with seasonings like turmeric that give the rice its beautiful yellow color and earthy taste.

How to Make

This Instant Pot yellow rice is a quick dump and go recipe!

Just stir all the ingredients together in the liner of your Instant Pot.

Secure the lid on the Pot and make sure the vent valve is sealed.

Pressure cook on high pressure for 3 minutes.

When the Pot beeps, let it sit undisturbed to do a natural release for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, carefully open the vent valve to release any of the remaining steam.

Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.

Serve and enjoy!

What to Serve Yellow Rice with

Yellow rice makes an earthy side dish or base for so many meals!

We like it with:

  • grilled chicken
  • salmon
  • jerk chicken or shrimp
  • with falafel

Storing Leftovers

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Reheat in the microwave, adding more butter or broth if the rice has dried out.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use salted or unsalted butter. If you use salted butter, you may want to use a reduced sodium broth.
  • Don’t skip the natural release. The rice won’t be done enough without it.
  • Use only a scant amount of cinnamon. It won’t give the rice a sweet flavor but rather just a touch of warm earthiness.
