What do you call the kind of sandwiches Subway serves?
Are they grinders, hoagies, subs, or something else?
Well, no matter what you call them, they are super yummy- especially the Italian style ones.
In some parts, these tasty sandwiches filled with salami and other Italian meats and cheeses are called Italian grinders.
You’ll find a long sandwich roll sliced down the middle and filled with salami, pepperoni, and capicola or mortadella topped with provolone, banana peppers, lettuce, onions, and dressing.
It’s so good and super filling.

Serving Suggestions
I like to serve this on sub rolls as a nod to an Italian grinder.
You can also serve it:
- on sandwich bread
- in a wrap
- on lettuce leaves for a lower carb option
- as dip or spread with crackers
Storing Leftovers
Store the chicken salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Tips and Tricks
- If you are using leftover chicken, only store the salad for up to 5 days after the chicken was originally cooked.
- Substitute or omit any of the ingredients you don’t like in the salad itself.
- Taste the dressed salad before you season it with salt and pepper. The banana pepper brine adds salty flavor.
