Oven baked meatball sub sandwiches use a couple of premade ingredients to create a toasty warm cheesy hoagie that’s better than any you could buy from the sandwich shop. These will be a new go to for busy days that you will love!
You can do so many wonderful things with premade ingredients.
The quality of certain things has really gotten good.
Like frozen meatballs.
The kinds you can find in the store are so yummy these days!
We almost always have a bag in our freezer.
And instead of always serving up spaghetti and meatballs, I like to do other things like turn them into toasty, cheesy meatball subs.
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Sub or hoagie rolls– Get large ones and look for ones that are soft but have a nice crusty exterior.
- Meatballs– I use a 28 ounce package of frozen meatballs. Use your favorite brand or you can also use homemade meatballs if you prefer.
- Pasta sauce– A 32 ounce jar of tomato basil sauce. You could also use homemade sauce if you prefer.
- Cheese– Shredded mozzarella. You could also get a bit creative and add sliced provolone and/or shredded Parmesan to the mix.
- Butter– Softened to spread on the inside of the rolls.
How to Make
These baked meatball subs practically make themselves!
To make these toasty sandwiches, lightly spray a 9×13′ baking dish with non stick spray and set it aside.
Then, stir together the meatballs and sauce in a large sauce pan.
Cover the pan and heat everything just until the meatballs are warmed through.
Stir it occasionally.
When you are ready to make the subs, brush or spoon the inside of each roll with melted butter.
Then add enough meatballs to fill each roll and sauce to the inside.
Spoon extra sauce on top of the meatballs.
Add the meatball subs to the prepared dish in a single row.
Spread the cheese evenly out over all of the subs.
Bake the tray of sandwiches at 400° for 10-15 minutes, just until the buns are toasted and the cheese is hot and bubbly.
Serve warm and enjoy!
How many meatballs should go in each sandwich?
This will vary based on how big your hoagie rolls are and how big your meatballs are, but 4-5 meatballs per sandwich is a good estimate.
Storing Leftovers
I don’t recommend storing leftover assembled sandwiches as the bread will get soggy.
However you can store any leftover meatballs and sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days.
Tips and Tricks
- You can scale this recipe up or down by using more or less meatballs and sauce.
- Adding other cheeses like sharp provolone and Parmesan will really make these sandwiches amazing.
- Kick it up another notch by adding some pressed garlic into the melted butter before you spoon it on the rolls.
