Pork lo mein is an easy take out dish you can make right at home without paying a premium. This dish features stir fried pork and veggies with noodles all tossed together in a savory sauce.
I love takeout Chinese.
But the downside of having a big family is that ordering Chinese for us all often means spending over a hundred dollars.
That’s just not in the budget.
To keep my cravings satisfied and my wallet happy, I often skip takeout in favor of making takeout inspired meals right at home.
And these pork lo mein noodles brings all the flavors you love from your favorite Chinese noodles to you in a dish that will feed the whole family for a fraction of the price of ordering in.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Pork– A pound of pork cubed
- Hoisin sauce– This is like Chinese barbecue sauce. You can buy it in the Asian foods aisle.
- Soy sauce– Use lite soy sauce so it won’t be too salty.
- Brown sugar– For balancing the flavors
- Red bell pepper– Sliced
- Green onions– Chopped
- Garlic– Fresh garlic cloves minced
- Coleslaw mix– Or a mix of shredded cabbage and carrots. Don’t use any of the dressing that may come with the veggies.
- Sesame oil– Just a little. Again you can find this in the Asian food aisle.
- Ketchup
- Cornstarch– To thicken the sauce
- Red food coloring– Optional to give it that classic roast pork color.
- Lo mein noodles– You can find these in the Asian food section. Don’t have any? Substitute spaghetti or rice noodles.
How to Make
Making homemade pork lo mein is easy!
Get your noodles cooking according to the package directions.
While the noodles cook, make the sauce.
Start by whisking 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon lite soy sauce and 1 to 2 tablespoons brown sugar together in a mixing bowl.
If you are using the food coloring, you can also whisk that in now.
Toss in the cubed pork so it gets coated with the sauce.
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.
When the skillet is hot, cook the pork for 2 minutes before adding the red bell pepper, cabbage mix, scallions and garlic.
Stir fry everything for another 3-5 minutes or just until the pork is cooked through and glazy.
Then add the remaining hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ketchup, sesame oil and cornstarch to the pan.
Stir this together, making sure everything gets coated, and bring the sauce to quick bubble.
Toss the cooked noodles with the pork veggie mixture.
If your sauce is too thick you can add ¼ cup of water if needed.
Serve and enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat the noodles in the microwave until warmed through.
Tips and Tricks
- Adjust the amount of brown sugar you are adding to your sauce by how sweet you like your sauce. Add more if you prefer a sweeter lo mein sauce and less if you like them more on the savory side.
- For a little heat, you can add a tablespoon or so of sriracha or a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes.
- You can add other veggies like sliced mushroom and snow peas to the noodles.
