Slow cooker taco meat is a 3 ingredient recipe that is perfect for serving to a crowd or making on the busiest of days! With almost no prep, this will be your new go to whenever tacos are on the menu!
We eat a lot of tacos in this house.
And while it’s generally pretty easy to put together taco meat on the stove, this slow cooker taco meat is even easier!
Mind blowing right?
We’re talking 3 ingredients in an easy dump and go recipe.
And of course, enough taco meat to feed a crowd!
That means this is perfect for big families, taco bar situations, or parties.
Ingredients
To make this you only need:
- Ground beef– Use lean ground beef. I’d recommend 90/10 or leaner for this since you don’t drain the grease off.
- Salsa– A 16 ounce jar of mild restaurant style salsa. Make sure you are using the thin style not chunky salsa.
- Taco seasoning– 2 packets of it.
That’s it!
How to Make
Slow cooker taco meat is the easiest way you could possibly make taco meat!
Just add everything to your slow cooker and stir it together as best as you can.
Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook it on HIGH for 2.5 – 3 hours or LOW for 4.5 hours.
When the meat is cooked, remove the lid and use a sturdy spoon to break it up into the smallest pieces possible.
Scoop it into taco shells with a slotted spoon.
Enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
If you have leftover taco meat, you can store it once it is completely cooled in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Can I freeze this?
Yes!
Slow cooker taco meat is perfect for freezer cooker and meal prepping!
Just let it cool completely and scoop it into a freezer bag or freezer safe container.
Freeze for up to 3 months, thawing in the microwave or in the fridge before reheating.
Can I put raw ground beef in the slow cooker?
Yes!
The trick to doing this is just making sure you are using lean ground beef since you won’t be draining it.
You also want to really break up the beef both when stirring everything together and after everything cooks to give it that crumbled texture.
Tips and Tricks
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken if you prefer.
- While we use the packets of taco seasoning, you could use 4-5 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning.
- Definitely use a slotted spoon to scoop the meat out of the slow cooker. It will have more moisture than stove top taco meat, and the slotted spoon will allow some of the excess to drain away.
