Last minute, unexpected guests seem to go hand in hand in my home for both the holidays and game days. Therefore having quick and easy appetizer ideas on hand is a must for me.
Nothing fits the bill better than a good sausage ball. I’ve yet to meet a person who will turn one down. But with everyone serving them, I had to find a way to make a better version that stands out.
And that’s where this quick, easy spicy pimento cheese sausage ball recipe comes in!
Delicious perfection in every bite, and there are never any leftovers. I highly recommend you serve them at your next potluck or party to find out what all the fuss is about.
Ingredients Needed
This easy appetizer only uses a handful of ingredients.
You’ll need:
- Sausage – A 1 lb roll of spicy/hot ground breakfast sausage
- Cream Cheese – Half a block of cream cheese that’s really softened
- Pimento Cheese
- Bisquick – the original, plain store bought version
Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients you’re ready to begin.
Where Can I Find Pimento Cheese?
Pimento cheese has to be refrigerated. In the grocery store you can usually find it in tubs in the same sections as the sour cream and cottage cheese.
If not there, check the specialty food and cheese section near the deli.
How To Make
Making an old fashioned sausage ball should never be hard, even when spicing it up and giving it a bit of a makeover- so trust me when I tell you that despite the flavor upgrade, this is still a simple recipe at heart.
Start by adding all of the ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, mix everything together until evenly combined.
Roll the mixture into 1 -1 1/2″ balls, depending on the size of the crowd you’re serving.
Transfer the balls to a parchment paper lined rimmed baking sheet in neat rows. Continue rolling balls and adding them to the prepared baking sheet until all the meat mixture’s been used.
Bake the spicy pimento cheese sausage balls at 400F for 18-22 minutes, just until they’re cooked through and nicely browned.
Let them rest for 5 minutes, then serve and enjoy!
Do I Need To Cook The Sausage First?
No! When you add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl to be combined, the sausage should be raw and uncooked. It will completely cook through once you bake the balls.
Can I Freeze Sausage Balls?
Sausage balls can be frozen before or after baking.
To make them ahead of time and freeze to bake later, prepare them as instructed and arrange them on the baking tray. Freeze flat, then transfer the frozen balls to sturdy ziplocking bags.
Bake from frozen, but add a couple minutes to the baking time.
Cooled, baked sausage balls can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
TIPS & TRICKS
- I do not recommend trying to stir the ingredients together with a spoon or spatula unless you really want an upper arm workout. The best method is with a hand or stand mixer, and the second is using clean, or gloved, hands.
- Want to up the spice factor? Seed and mince a large jalapeno and add it to the mix.
- You can use homemade pimento cheese or the store bought version in this recipe.
