Air fryer French toast sticks are a delicious way to start the day. This sweet breakfast is easy to make and will satisfy your whole family with little effort.
French toast is a staple on weekend mornings.
And my kids especially love French toast sticks even though they are older.
I used to make that all the time when they were little and they still love them now.
The nostalgia factor, you know?
And this version is full of the nostalgic goodness they love and I’m sure you and your kids even if they are grown will love too.
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Bread– I prefer using a nice thick brioche bread. Cut the slices into thirds.
- Eggs– To make the custardy coating.
- Heavy cream– For best results do not substitute a lower fat product.
- Milk– Whole milk. Don’t swap the milk for a lower fat product.
- Sugar– Granulated for the custard and powder to garnish if you would like.
- Flavorings– Cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a touch of salt.
How to Make French Toast Sticks in the Air Fryer
Making these breakfast treats is very easy!
To do it, slice each piece of bread into thirds and then set them aside.
Then whisk the eggs, cream, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until smooth and creamy in a medium sized bowl.
Now, dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture just until coated, but not soggy.
Work in batches if you know they won’t all fit in your air fryer basket.
Liberally coat your air fryer basket with non stick cooking spray, then add the prepared bread so it fits but is not touching or overlapping.
Then, cook at 360° for 6-8 minutes until they are golden brown.
Flip them halfway through.
Repeat in batches, as needed, until all the french toast sticks have been cooked.
Serve warm with syrup for drizzling or dipping!
How to Make French Toast Sticks in the Oven
No air fryer? No problem! You can make these in the oven instead.
To do it, prepare the bread and batter as directed above.
Then, place the coated bread sticks on a cookie sheet sprayed with nonstick spray or parchment paper.
Bake them in the oven at 375 for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Serve and enjoy!
What bread should I use?
The best bread for French toast is brioche. Other sandwich style breads don’t hold a candle to it, becoming soggy in the process.
Brioche bread includes eggs in the batter, making it richer and heartier so it can handle the egg wash and also cooks up into a more delicious treat overall.
Don’t have brioche? Use French bread or challah instead.
Can’t find any of that? Go for a loaf of bakery bread.
Basically, you’re going to want to avoid sliced sandwich breads for best results.
Topping and Dipping Ideas
You can top these with any of your favorite French toast toppings.
We love dusting them in powdered sugar and serving them with butter and syrup.
They are also amazing topped with fresh fruit.
My kids also love to eat these as finger food and dip them into:
- syrup
- Nutella
- chocolate syrup
- honey
- jam
If you want to dip these into jam or Nutella, I recommend scooping the jam or Nutella into a microwave safe bowl and microwaving it for about 15 seconds to make it a more dippable consistency.
Can These Be Frozen?
These air fryer french toasts sticks can be made ahead of time, and frozen until ready to cook and enjoy. Making them perfect for batch cooking on the weekend, and pulling out for a hot grab and go breakfast on busy mornings.
To do this, prepare them as instructed and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled transfer them to a ziplocking bag, and freeze.
Pull out the desired amount and you can microwave them or (for best results) pop them back into the air fryer for a couple minutes until nice and crispy.
Do not thaw them before cooking.
Storing Leftovers
I don’t recommend storing or saving leftovers, especially if they’ve been drenched in syrup. They get soggy so you’ll want to make these fresh unless making them specifically for meal prepping.
Tips and Tricks
- For best results leave a little space between all the sticks when placing them in the air fryer. Cook best when air’s able to circulate- just the nature of air fryers
- DO NOT soak your bread. It will quickly turn to mush. So quickly. Instead, quickly dip the bread slices in the egg wash mixture. Also, allow excess mixture to drip/drain off before placing in the basket
- Liberally spray the air fryer basket with non stick spray in between batches to prevent sticking. In between EACH batch, otherwise they will stick.
- If you don’t have non stick spray you can line your basket with parchment paper, but make sure to poke holes in it to perforate to allow air flow through.
