Feeding so many boys with such big appetites is such a challenge.

I can’t stand being in the kitchen when there are so many other things to do and that I need to do.

And if I am not careful, the boys would be asking for food again as soon as one meal is done.

So I prefer nice hearty dishes that’ll stick to their ribs and keep em full and happy for a little while so I can do something- anything– else.

This is one of those casseroles that fits the bill.

I can get it into the oven with barely any work at all and 30 minutes later everyone is fed, happy, and full.

Full enough to last without asking me a thousand times for another snack until bed.

Ingredients

This casserole only needs a handful of very easy to find ingredients. To make it you’ll need:

  • Hot dogs– Slice them into half inch coins.
  • Canned chili– Sure you could use any homemade leftover chili if you prefer. You can use chili with or without beans.
  • Seasonings and condiments– Ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and red pepper flakes.
  • Cheese– Lots of shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Tater tots– A big package of frozen tots.

How to Make

This tater tot casserole with hot dogs is so easy to make, you won’t believe it!

To do it, start by spraying a 9×13″ baking dish with nonstick spray and setting it aside.

Then stir the sliced hot dogs, canned chili, condiments, and red pepper flakes together in a mixing bowl.

Transfer the mixture the sprayed baking dish, spreading it out into an even layer.

Then, top it with an even layer of cheese and finish it off with a layer of tater tots.

Bake it at 350 for 30 minutes or until the tots are crisp and the casserole bubbles.

Serve and enjoy!

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes!

I like to put it together in the morning and let it hang out in the fridge, tightly covered in foil, until I am ready to bake it.

Storing Leftovers

Leftover chili cheese dog tater tot casserole will store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

I recommend reheating it in the oven until the casserole is warmed through so the tots have a chance to crisp up again, which won’t happen as well in the microwave.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you use chili without beans, your filling will be on the thinner side. It will still taste good, it will just appear soupier when served.
  • Do not press the tots down into the casserole, you want them resting on top of the cheese layer in a single layer. This will ensure maximum crispness.
  • I love toppings. Let’s put toppings on all the things! We top this with thinly sliced green onion and a dash of hot sauce. Feel free to use toppings of your preference.

I made this using this recipe, just had to add a little extra here & there because I had more hot dogs than what was called for & they were the large Costco hot dogs. My family loved it!!! I also made garlic bread out of the leftover buns & served that with it! A little bit of a heavy meal but so good.
