Crockpot grits are the easiest, creamiest grits recipe you will ever make! This decadent side dish is a true Southern comfort food classic with all the down home flavors and textures with almost no work.
Are you even Southern if you don’t have grits for breakfast at least once in awhile?
Probably not.
I grew up on the classic comfort food as a hearty breakfast and brunch side dish.
Sometimes, we’d even have it on the dinner table.
No one was complaining about that either since grits are so buttery and delicious.
And these Crockpot grits are no exception.
They are buttery and creamy to the max and so very easy to make!
You’ll be so in love that you’ll always be cooking grits in your slow cooker!
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Grits– You must use old fashioned grits and not quick grits for this recipe
- Chicken broth– Don’t have it? Use water instead
- Salt and pepper– To taste
- Heavy cream– Don’t substitute. The heavy cream makes them so rich and velvety!
- Butter– Sliced into thick pats.
How to Make
Crockpot grits are so easy to make!
Just stir the grits, broth, salt, and pepper together in the bowl of a slow cooker.
Top the mixture evenly with the pats of butter.
Put the lid on your slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 hours or HIGH for 3-4, stirring every hour.
When the cook time is done, turn off the slow cooker.
Quickly stir the cream into the grits.
Let the mixture rest, uncovered, for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, stir it again.
Serve warm with your favorite toppings.
Enjoy!
Toppings for Grits
We often top our grits with savory toppings like:
- cheese
- fried eggs
- crumbled up bacon
- caramelized onions
- roasted red peppers
- shrimp
Of course you could also top grits with sweet toppings like:
- raisins
- cinnamon
- syrup

And whether you’re feeling sweet or savory, you’ll definitely want to serve these with a big pat of butter on top!

Store leftover grits in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
