Learn how to make homemade brown gravy mix! This handy recipe will save the day if you forget to pick up a premade packet at the store and is every bit as delicious!

You ever get home from picking up your groceries and realize as you are unpacking your bags you forgot something?
It happens to me more often than I’d like.
And it’s almost always something little but entirely important.
Like a packet of brown gravy mix.
And that means I either have to haul myself back to the store, order it for delivery and pay a premium, or make my own.

Since I discovered this homemade brown gravy mix recipe that uses staples I have in my kitchen, I always opt to make my own.
It’s easy, quick, and makes a big batch of gravy mix that you can turn into 15 cups of gravy over the course of several months.
Ingredients
To make the brown gravy mix itself you’ll need:

- Flour– All purpose
- Beef bouillon powder– Not the cubes. This normally comes in a jar near the gravy packets or you can buy it online.
- Black pepper
And if you want to turn this homemade brown gravy mix into gravy you’ll need:
- Brown gravy mix– Obviously. Measure out 2 tablespoons
- Butter– You could also use pan drippings from your roast
- Water– You want to use warm water
How to Make
To make the homemade brown gravy mix, just stir all the ingredients for the gravy mix together in a small bowl.

Transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the pantry.
How to Make Brown Gravy from Homemade Gravy Mix
To turn your homemade mix into brown gravy, melt two tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Once the butter melts, stir the gravy mix into the sauce pan.
Keep stirring until the gravy mix soaks up all the butter.
Whisk in about a third of the water slowly.
Stir while the gravy thickens slightly and then stir in the rest of the water.
Let the gravy keep cooking until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Serve immediately and enjoy.

Storing
Store homemade mix in an airtight jar or container in the pantry for up to 6 months.
For homemade brown gravy, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or so or in a freezer safe container in the freezer for up to 4 months.

Tips and Tricks
- Make sure you are storing the gravy mix in something that seals tightly. This will help protect the mixture from moisture and make sure it stays fresh longer.
- When you are making the gravy, the key is stirring. Stir the gravy mix pretty consistently until it absorbs the butter and makes a smooth, paste like consistency.
- Add the water to the gravy mixture a little at a time, again stirring pretty consistently to keep it lump free.
