What is bread pudding?

Bread pudding is a traditional English dessert that is very similar to a French toast casserole.

Normally it features pieces of stale bread soaked in a rich custard.

Then the whole thing gets baked so it is soft set (whereas French toast casserole is normally a little more done).

Our version ditches the bread and subs in donuts, because why not?

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Krispy Kreme donuts– A dozen of the full sized Krispy Kreme glazed donuts.
  • Eggs– Beaten
  • Milk– Whole. Don’t substitute a lower fat dairy.
  • Heavy cream– Again you need this full fat version for this to work properly.
  • Sugar– Brown
  • Salt– Just a pinch to balance the flavors
  • Vanilla extract– I always recommend the real stuff
  • Nutmeg– Just a pinch. Skip it if you are not a fan of nutmeg.

How to Make

Making Krispy Kreme bread pudding is a snap!

Just cut the donuts into quarters, then add them in an even layer to a greased 9×13″ baking dish.

Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, salt, and nutmeg together in a large mixing bowl.

Pour the liquid mixture evenly out over the donuts, using a spatula to press the donuts down into the liquid slightly.

Let the dish to rest for a full 10 minutes on the counter prior to baking.

Then bake it, uncovered, at 350° for 45-50 minutes.

After 45-50 minutes, take the dish out of the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Slice, serve warm, and enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Store leftovers tightly covered in the baking dish or in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Reheat the leftovers in a hot oven until warmed through.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use an 11X7″ baking dish, if preferred, but it will be a tighter fit for the ingredients.
  • Don’t be tempted to skip the 10 minute rest period after the milk mixture is poured over the chopped donuts. This is crucial to allow the pastry to absorb the custard mixture. It will bake up a mushy mess if you don’t give it time to absorb the liquid.
  • Let the custard set for a few minutes prior to serving for best results.
