My family is a meat and potatoes family.

That’s what happens when you have a family of 4 boys.

They have big appetites that require protein and potatoes.

A favorite?

Shepherds pie with its delicious combination of browned ground beef or lamb and veggies in a rich gravy baked under mounds of fluffy mashed potatoes.

Now listen, in theory, this is not hard to do.

But the act of making mashed potatoes and then browning meat and assembling a casserole?

Let’s make this easier and simplify it by substituting making mashed potatoes for using tater tots instead.

Cutting out that additional prep step makes this shepherds pie tater tot casserole feel that much more doable on the busiest of nights but still results in a satisfying casserole that feeds 6.

How to Make

Making this shepherds pie tater tot casserole is easier than making traditional shepherds pie!

To do it, brown the beef with the onions and garlic, crumbling as it cooks, until the beef is browned throughout in a large oven safe skillet.

Once the beef is brown, stir the flour into the cooked beef and cook for 60 seconds.

Then stir the soup and milk into the skillet.

Cook the mixture over medium heat, letting it simmer until the mixture has thickened.

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and vegetables.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Spread the mixture out evenly in a 9×13″ baking dish.

Then spread the shredded cheese evenly out overtop.

Top the casserole with tater tots, spreading them out in a spiral manner, working from the outer edges in until the casserole’s completely covered.

Bake at 425° for 25-30 minutes, just until the tater tots are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling on the edges.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • Lean ground beef is a must! If you use a fattier ground beef, you’ll definitely need to drain the grease and be prepared for the meat to cook down.
  • You can use a standard mixed vegetable blend or a blend of peas and carrots if you prefer.
  • If you use a large oven safe skillet, you can top it with the cheese and tater tots right in the skillet and transfer the skillet to the oven. Less mess!
