We love going out for Mexican food.

One of the absolute best parts of eating in a Mexican restaurant is the fresh guacamole prepared tableside.

It’s so much better than anything you could buy at the store and compliments those chip baskets so well.

If it’s easy enough for restaurants to offer tableside guacamole, it’s definitely doable to make the best homemade guacamole recipe right at home.

This homemade guacamole is as yummy (or yummier since you can customize it totally to your liking) as the tableside guac at a Mexican restaurant and absolutely blows store bought guac right outta the water.

Make one batch and you’ll never buy premade guac again!

What is traditional guacamole made of?

Traditional guacamole features a combination of avocadoes, lime juice, and salt.

You can add other flavors into it as well like diced tomatoes and onions for texture and sweetness and jalapenos for heat.

The best homemade guacamole recipe features all those flavors and a healthy sprinkle of fresh chopped cilantro to finish it off.

How to Make

Homemade guacamole is so easy to make!

Just cut the avocadoes in half and remove the pits.

Then scoop the flesh of the avocado out of the skin.

Discard the skins and put the avocado into a mixing bowl.

Mash it with a fork until the avocado is smooth and creamy.

Stir in the remaining ingredients until everything is combined.

Taste it and add more salt if desired.

Serve and enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

While homemade guacamole is best fresh, you can store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to a day or longer with the trick below.

How to Keep Leftover Guacamole Green

If you don’t think you will eat the leftover guacamole within a day, then you’ll want to store it so it doesn’t turn brown.

To do that, transfer the guacamole to a storage container, pressing it out into a flat, even layer.

Pour half an inch of cold water on top.

Put a lid on the container and refrigerate for up to 72 hours, pouring the water off and stirring well before serving again.

How to Pick a Good Avocado

Choosing an avocado can be tricky since they have such a short window of perfection.

To pick one, first feel the avocado.

You want the avocado to feel firm with a slight give to it.

If the avocado hard with no give, it is under ripe.

An overripe avocado will feel soft like if you press it your fingers will sink into the flesh.

Another trick is to pull of the little stem on the end of the avocado.

If the area under the skin is brown, chances are the avocado is too ripe but if the area is greenish and the flesh is firm with slight give, it is perfect!

Tips and Tricks

  • If you’re avocados are on the smaller side, you may need to use more for the proper ratio.
  • I recommend using fresh lime juice for the best flavor, but bottled will do in a pinch.
  • While I recommend mashing the avocadoes until they are smooth, you can mash them less for a chunkier guacamole.
