Walking Gyros

Walking gyros are a Greek spin on walking tacos. They feature individual bags of pita chips topped with seasoned ground lamb, tzatziki sauce, feta, and veggies for a yummy Mediterranean meal.

WALKING GYROS ON A WOODEN TABLE

One of my favorite casual meals to make is walking tacos.

It’s such a fun way to eat tacos.

You know a bag of chips, taco meat, and all the fixins.

No plate needed because you eat right out of the chip bag.

Well, these walking gyros are pretty much Greek walking tacos.

We substitute corn chips with pita chips and taco meat with Greek seasoned lamb.

And instead of taco fixins- you guessed it- gyro fixins!

These are perfect for parties since it feeds a crowd or any casual meal.

Ingredients

To make these you’ll need:

  • Pita chips– You want 1 ounce bags of them so you can have perfectly portioned individual servings.
  • Ground lamb– Can’t find it or don’t like it? Substitute ground beef instead.
  • Greek seasoning– Normally a blend of Mediterranean seasonings like garlic powder, basil, oregano, cinnamon, black pepper, parsley, rosemary, dill, marjoram, cornstarch, thyme, and nutmeg. You can find premade blends in the spice aisle or online here.
  • Tzatziki sauce– Your favorite store bought kind or homemade tzatziki sauce
  • Veggies– Halved cherry tomatoes, shredded lettuces, sliced black olives
  • Feta– Crumbled

Walking gyros are so easy to make!

To do it, cook the ground lamb in a skillet over medium heat until crumbled and cooked through.

Drain the meat well and then season it with the Greek seasoning to taste.

Set the meat aside.

Then open the bags of chips.

Gently squeeze each bag to crush the pita chips.

Arrange the bags upright in a small to medium sized dish.

Scoop some meat into each bag followed by some of each ingredient.

Storing Leftovers

I do not recommend planning leftovers of the walking gyros once they are assembled.

However if you think you will have leftovers, you can store the meat in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

You can also store your toppings in individual air tight containers in the fridge for several days.

Tips and Tricks

  • Not serving these right away? Transfer the cooked meat to an oven safe dish, cover it with foil, and keep in the oven on warm for up to an hour.
  • If you are serving these at a party, you can keep the meat warm in a small covered crockpot on the warm setting.
  • Feel free to substitute toppings to your liking.
