Breakfast is not my favorite meal, and I am not shy about it.

Not because I don’t enjoy breakfast flavors, because I really do, but rather because I am not a morning person and hate cooking soon after I get up.

Still the kids have to eat, and it sets the tone for the day- blah, blah blah. So breakfast still has to be made.

Luckily, I can whip up a bowl of this 5 minute s’mores oatmeal (that’s relatively good for you and tastes like dessert) with minimal effort.

Everyone’s happy, and it’s a delicious start to any day!

Ingredients Needed

It wouldn’t be an easy breakfast recipe without an equally easy ingredient list.

Thankfully, this recipe comes together with only a handful of ingredients.

You’ll need:

  • Oats – You’ll need old fashioned, steel cut oats for this recipe- NOT the quick cooking variety.
  • Milk – You can use any variety you like.
  • Marshmallows – Jumbo (regular) marshmallows, not the miniature variety.
  • Toppings – Hershey’s bar pieces, graham crackers crumbs, and mini marshmallows all for garnish

That’s it!

How To Make

Making this s’mores oatmeal is just as easy as the name and the short ingredient list implies!

To start, add the milk to a small pot set over medium high heat.

Bring the milk to a boil, but as soon as it comes to a boil- reduce the heat IMMEDIATELY to low so that it only simmers. Milk left to boil will scorch, so you have to move quickly.

Add the oats to the pot, and stir to incorporate.

Let the oat milk mixture simmer for about 4-5 minutes, stirring often. Stirring will not only prevent it from sticking to the pot, but will also help the oats cook quickly.

Let the oats cook just until tender and the mixture’s creamy- then immediately remove the pot from heat.

Add the marshmallows to the hot mixture in the pot, and stir until melted completely into the oats.

Transfer the hot marshmallow oatmeal to a bowl.

Add the desired toppings, and serve!

Storing

This s’mores oatmeal should really be served right away. Oatmeal tends to congeal quickly if left to sit.

We recommend making as needed, especially since it only takes 5 minutes.

If you happen to have leftovers, you can store then in an airtight container in the fridge overnight.

Heat in a pot on the stove, and thin with additional milk, until hot & bubbly.
