Ingredients Needed

Like all of our recipes- this one has a relatively short ingredient list.

You’ll need:

  • Hot Dogs – 3-4 grilled hot dogs, sliced in half lengthwise, then sliced into coins
  • Butter – While you can use regular butter, I recommend salted butter.
  • Aromatics – A small yellow onion, peeled & diced + freshly minced garlic.
  • Rice – About three cups of steamed white rice, preferably cold.
  • Eggs – You’ll need two large eggs, cracked and beaten.
  • Vegetables – A blend of peas and carrots. I use the frozen kind, and thaw them before using. You can used (drained) canned peas and carrots, but they will be on the softer side which will differ from traditional fried rice.
  • Sauces – This recipe uses both sesame oil and soy sauce for flavoring.
  • Garnish – Thinly sliced green onions and sesame seeds, for garnish.

Once you’ve gathered all of your ingredients, it’s time to get started.

How To Make

Making this leftover hot dog fried rice is both quick and easy.

Start by adding the butter to a large skillet set over medium heat.

Once the butter’s melted, add the onions to the skillet. Stir them often, cooking just until tender.

Add the garlic, stirring to combine, and cook just until fragrant- no more than 60 seconds, otherwise the garlic may scorch and turn bitter.

Add the rice to the skillet, then pour the oil over it. Stir everything together until evenly combined.

Cook, stirring often, for 3-5 minutes- just until the rice has crisped some.

Push all of the rice to one side of the skillet, then pour the beaten eggs into the clear side and scramble.

Once the eggs have cooked through, stir everything together until evenly combined.

Add the remaining ingredients, except the green onion, to the skillet and stir together until evenly combine.

Cook just until the peas & carrots have cooked through.

Serve warm, garnished with the sliced green onions, and enjoy!

Why Should The Rice Be Cold For Making Fried Rice?

Using cold rice will yield the best results for fried rice.

As the rice chills it firms up, making it easier to separate when cooking, and preventing it from becoming mushy.

I recommend making the rice the night before, and refrigerating overnight.

If that’s not an option, you can make it earlier in the day, let it air out, then chill for at least 2-3 hours before using.

Storing

Allow leftover fried rice to cool, then store in an air tight container in the refrigerator and use within 3-4 days.

Can I Freeze Leftover Fried Rice?

Leftover fried rice freezes beautifully.

Allow it to cool completely, then portion out into freezer safe, air tight containers. You can also use freezer grade ziplocking bags.

The rice will keep for up to a month.

When ready to eat, allow the rice to thaw completely before reheating for the best results.
