And aside from cheese balls, I also adore Chinese takeouts.

One of my favorite things to order?

Crab rangoon obviously.

This crab rangoon cheese balls has all those familiar creamy, savory flavors you love from the takeout favorite in one easy appetizer.

It’s absolutely packed with crab and plenty of flavor, and so fun to spread on your favorite dippers!

Make sure you spray the cookie sheet liberally with nonstick spray prior to putting the cut potatoes on it. The sweet potato flesh will caramelize on the cookie sheet and the caramelization makes for sticking if you don't spray.
Avoid huge sweet potatoes for this recipe, and instead pick small/medium ones. While technically you could make this with a large sweet potato, you won't get that same crunchy soft combo in each bite. Smaller sweet potatoes work best here.
Check the potatoes for tenderness before you broil them. Just gently poke a fork into the side of the potato. If it easily pierces the potato, you're ready to flip the sweet potatoes and finish them off.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Cream cheese– Softened to room temperature
  • Mayonnaise– Real, full fat mayonnaise and not low fat mayonnaise style dressing or Miracle Whip.
  • Seasonings– Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and garlic powder
  • Green onions– Thinly sliced
  • Cheese– Shredded mozzarella
  • Imitation crab meat– You can use real crab meat if desired.

How to Make

This crab rangoon cheese ball is a really easy appetizer to make for entertaining.

To make it, use a hand mixer to whip  the cream cheese, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and garlic together a large mixing bowl until it’s all evenly combined.

Then use a sturdy spatula to fold in 1 tablespoon of the sliced green onions, all the mozzarella, and all the crab meat to the cream cheese mixture until evenly incorporated.

Form the mixture together into a large lump in the bottom of the bowl and then transfer the cheese ball lump to a large sheet of plastic wrap.

Wrap it up tightly to completely enclose the cheese ball in the plastic wrap and use your hands to shape it into a ball.

Refrigerate the cheese ball for at least 4 hours, or up to overnight.

After the cheese ball has chilled, spread the remaining onion out in an even layer on a large plate.

Unwrap the chilled cheese ball and roll it in the onions to cover the cheese ball in the onions.

Put it on a serving platter with assorted crackers and dippers.

Enjoy!
