When the weather warms up, what’s better than a nice cold DQ Blizzard?
Making your own homemade Blizzards!
They are just as yummy and you can treat the family for less than the cost of one large Blizzard.
And my recipe will teach you how to make a Circus Cookie Blizzard, an M&M Blizzard, and a brownie Blizzard so there’s something for everyone!
Ingredients
Each type of homemade Blizzard starts with vanilla ice cream and then has its own mix ins.
For the Circus Cookie Blizzard you’ll also need:
- Pink frosting– Either homemade pink frosting or store bought. If you can’t find pink frosting, add a few drops of red food coloring to vanilla frosting and mix it in to make pink.
- Circus Cookies– Frosted pink animal cracker cookies. Crumble them first.
To make an M&M Blizzard you’ll need:
- M&Ms– Crumbled. To crumble them, roll them with a rolling pin while they are still in the bag or gently whack them with a meat mallet.
- Hot fudge– Cooled
And for a brownie Blizzard, you’ll need:
- Cosmic Brownies– Diced. You could use any other brownie you like if you prefer.
- Hot fudge– Cooled
How to Make a Homemade Circus Cookie Blizzard
Chill the bowl of your stand mixer in the freezer prior to starting.
Add a heaping cup of vanilla icing, the frosting, and almost all of your crumbled Circus Cookies to the chilled bowl of your stand mixer.
Mix on low speed with the paddle attachment until well combined.
Scoop into a serving dish and top it with leftover crumbled cookies.
Enjoy!
How to Make an M&M Blizzard
Making a homemade M&M Blizzard is very similar to making the homemade Circus Cookie Blizzard.
Just mix a heaping cup of vanilla ice cream with the M&Ms and a tablespoon of cool hot fudge in the chilled bowl of your stand mixer with the paddle attachment until everything is combined.
Scoop into a serving bowl, top with leftover crushed M&Ms, and enjoy!
How to Make a Brownie Blizzard
Making a homemade brownie Blizzard is very similar to making the homemade Circus Cookie Blizzard and the M&M Blizzard.
Just mix a heaping cup of vanilla ice cream with most of the diced brownies and a tablespoon of cool hot fudge in the chilled bowl of your stand mixer with the paddle attachment until everything is combined.
Scoop into a serving bowl, top with leftover diced brownies, and enjoy!
Storing
Just like the DQ version, these homemade Blizzards don’t store well.
They will melt in the fridge and freeze too solid in the freezer.
Tips and Tricks
- Don’t overmix the Blizzards. The mixing causes some friction and the friction will heat the ice cream and make it melt.
- You can use this method to make any flavor of Blizzard you like. Use crushed Snickers and hot fudge for a Snickers Blizzards, crushed Oreos and hot fudge for an Oreo Blizzard, or crushed Reeses, peanut butter and hot fudge for a Reeses Blizzard.
- Part of the fun of making homemade Blizzards is being able to customize them. Get wild and substitute chocolate ice cream or any other flavor for vanilla! Add in other toppings! The sky’s the limit at home!
