This quick and easy red velvet dip is a perfect dessert for Valentine’s Day. It’s simple to whip up since it uses boxed cake mix and sinfully sweet making it a perfect addition to any party or gathering. Serve it with a variety of dipping options for a delicious treat any crowd will enjoy!
While I don’t go all out for small holidays like Valentine’s Day and Saint Patrick’s Day, I do love finding simple ways to celebrate and acknowledge them with my kids.
One of my favorite ways to do this is with simple festive recipes.
This easy red velvet dip is a perfect sweet treat for a holiday created to show someone you love a little extra something special.
It’s also budget friendly and ready in minutes, making it a win for this busy Mom even on a weeknight!
Ingredients Needed
Luckily like all the sweetest recipes, this dessert dip is super easy with a short ingredient list.
To make it you’ll need:
- Cream Cheese – 8 ounces cream cheese, any brand, and make sure it’s at room temperature before beginning. This will prevent lumps in your dip.
- Butter – I recommend salted butter in sweet recipes, but you can use unsalted if sodium is a concern.
- Cake Mix – Specifically red velvet cake mix
- Sugar – Both powdered sugar and brown sugar
- Extract – Vanilla extract, you can use either real or the imitation variety.
- Milk – as needed, for thinning the dip since it will start out very thick
The recipe also indicates red food coloring as an optional ingredient; however, this will depend on how red you want it and the brand of cake mix used.
Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients you’re ready to begin!
How To Make
Making this red velvet dip is super simple.
Start by adding the cream cheese and butter to the bowl of a stand mixer, then whip them together until smooth & creamy.
Reduce the speed of the mixer to low and slowly add the the cake mix to it. Don’t do it too fast or on too high a speed or it will blow up and out of the mixing bowl.
Add the remaining ingredients, except for milk, and continue mixing just until everything’s evenly combined.
The dip will be very thick. Add the milk, mixing in a single tablespoon at a time, to thin it to your desired scoopable consistency.
Serve with your favorite dipping options and enjoy!
Dipping Options
One of the easiest ways to keep a dip from being boring is to serve it with an assortment of dipping options.
I recommend a mix of some of the following:
- Oreos (original or golden)
- Pretzels
- Strawberries
- Nilla Wafers
- Graham Crackers
- Sliced Apples
For an extra delicious combination, it also pairs really well with cubed pound cake.
Storing
Leftover red velvet cake mix dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. When ready to enjoy again take it out of the refrigerator and let it soften for about an hour.
Unfortunately this dip does not freeze well.
How To Heat Treat Cake Mix
So technically cake mix isn’t safe to consume without baking. It’s a bit like cookie dough, most of us take the chance but you don’t have to.
In order to avoid this, you’ll want to heat treat the cake mix. Do this by spreading it out in an even layer on a baking sheet and baking it for 5 minutes at 350F.
If you take this step, let the cake mix completely cool before proceeding with this recipe.
TIPS & TRICKS
- I do not recommend trying to whip this dip together by hand. Instead use a stand mixer or a hand held mixer to get the perfect consistency.
- Use a brand of cake mix you know and trust for the best results.
- Don’t like red velvet cake? Swap that cake mix flavor for another you prefer!
- For a festive touch, serve this dip topped with sprinkles on top. Mini chocolate chips also make a tasty topping!
